Provenance and tectonic setting of the Paleozoic Tamatán Group, NE Mexico: Implications for the closure of the Rheic Ocean

The Huizachal–Peregrina Anticlinorium in northeastern Mexico comprises a wide variety of Precambrian and Paleozoic basement units. In this work, Silurian-to-Permian unmetamorphosed siliciclastic successions (i.e., Cañón de Caballeros, Vicente Guerrero, Del Monte, Guacamaya formations) forming the Tamatán Group is described; group overlies Novillo metamorphic complex, which northernmost exposed region Oaxaquia microcontinent. paper, provenance model for proposed based on new petrological data, whole-rock geochemical U–Pb LA-ICP-MS detrital zircon age data from these marine fossiliferous strata. results show shallow-marine to deep-water clastic succession classified as feldspatho-lithic-quartzose litho-feldspatho-quartzose (Cañón Caballeros Guerrero feldspatho-quartzo-lithic litho-quartzo-feldspathic (Del Monte formations). indicate derivation felsitic, intermediate, basic rocks, intense moderate weathering, high recycling source area. geochronological can be organized into three main groups: (1) Meso-Neoproterozoic group, likely derived Maya block, also probable 1.5–1.6 Ga grains; (2) an Ordovician–Silurian that sourced by igneous Block intrusions or local units such Ordovician Peregrina Tonalite; (3) Pennsylvanian Permian magmatic arc-related diachronous Rheic closure.
